Bye-bye Megs

I just got news that one of my mom's dogs got out of her pen and got hit by the UPS truck. She didn't make it.
:(

You know there's someting odd about a pet dying. I mean I can hear about people getting killed all the time, but when a pet gets killed it always seems sadder. I'm not sure what that says.

I beg your pardon...

The other day, our network admin came tromping through the office on his way to the server room. I sit directly in front of the server room and as he was about to enter he turned and showed me a memo.

Our naming convention for user IDs is the straight forward first initial, last name. One of our users whose first initial is M and last name is Yanus had requested that her network user ID be changed to something else. For some reason MYanus@whereiwork.com didn't appeal to her.

My favorite up to this point had been SLimes@whereiwork.com.

I have an X Box

I have an X Box now. I got it from my dad who had bought it some months ago in response to his cousin getting one. My dad can be an odd dude sometimes. He really didn't have time to play it much and so when I was thinking about buying one he decided to give me his. I was pleased.

I owned the original Nintendo and the Super Nintendo, but I've never been a really big console game fan. While I'm not one to get involved in these flame wars that erupt over things such as console vs. PC and such, I have to admit I always felt that the PC was superior. I still do, but quite frankly I've lost interest in constantly having to upgrade my computer to keep playing games that I find interesting.

The nice thing about the X Box is that the performance is great and the graphics are really very impressive. The downside is that the games are so darned expensive, but I've found that you can get the older goodies for around $30. That isn't too bad, still can't afford it, but not bad. I haven't played too many games outside those my dad bought, but I can see that one downside is that most console games seem to fit in the first person shooter category or racing category. Some may manage to bend the spectrum a little, but they essential melt down to those two categories. I'll be interested to see if I can find anything really on the level of some PC games I've played. I look forward to trying to find a good RPG.

Another thing I hate:

Stupid hallway greetings! You know the kind, when you're walking down the hallway and you feel like you should say something. It always goes something like "Hey, how ya doin'?" Now the thing about this that I hate is when, before you can tell them how you are doing they immediately and automatically respond with, "Oh, I'm fine." And then keep walking. Or I say in response, "I'm great, how are you?" and they ignore you and keep walking.

I applaud the intention, but if you're going to ask the question then mean it! I'd rather just share a nod and a smile or something then going through this meaningless, stupid ritual. I realize you can't carry on a conversation while passing in the hall, but that only makes me feel more strongly…if you can't, then don't! What if I'm having a pissy day? I still have to say, "Oh, I'm fine." Because if I say, "Oh, I hate my life, would you please shoot me." Then things tend to get a little uncomfortable, and plus they'd probably send me to see the nurse or HR would send me a letter that says I need to seek counseling.

Evil Elevator People

I have a pet peeve. I have an irrational hatred and I need to get it out. I detest people who use the elevator to go up or down one story when the stairs are right next to elevator bank. This is a lenient pet peeve though, I make exceptions. If the person is elderly or older, maybe if the elevators aren't busy, I'll even let it slide at "I was just feeling lazy." I mean we've all done it a few times.

But what really chaps my hide is when in the morning, when the elevators are very busy and there are young, athletic looking students waiting for the elevator and then they get off at the second floor. Especially when most of us staff folks are going up to the 5th or 6th, and we're running a little late. I think the thing I love the most, though, is when people will wait several minutes to get on the elevator when going down the stairs would have taken much less time.

Gay Marriage: Evil or Opprotunity?

I'm a little surprised that there is such opposition to gay marriage in this country, especially seeing as how most of our elected officials seem to be lawyers. I say why not let gay people get married? Just think how many more divorce trials that divorce lawyers could have when the newly wedded gay folk suddenly realize they want to split up.

I'm a little bemused at why gay people want to get married. You can see how well it's all worked for us straight people. Marriage is an odd bird and there's something about the lawful binding of it all that seems to change things for people. I admit I dated a girl for four or five years and then lived with her a year before marrying and divorcing her after five months. Now I doubt we would have staid together much longer anyway, but who's to say it wouldn't have worked out?

Will gay marriages make God angry? I figure it could, but the I think we should let God decided that. Blasphemy isn't saying goddamn, it's telling people what you think God would say…keep that in mind oh holy rollers.

So I say why not. Lettem get married, they may soon find out that getting what you asked for isn't as great as it seems. Wait…not to mention…aren't these people supposed to living alternative lifestyles…what's with all this conforming?

It's Alive

Yes, someone still does blog here...just not very often.
Nothing has really struck a cord with me lately, so I haven't felt like writting about anything...even for my own entertainment.

Newsworthy events in my life: My lovely wife is in her last quarter of school, she should graduate in March...which is lovely great news! She also landed a sweet internship that actually pays...sure it's only minimum wage, but that's better than the big nothing that we expected. I'm very proud of her, she's worked so hard to get to this point and I'm very happy she got a good internship.

As for myself I was nominated for Employee of the Quarter for last quarter and I won...surprise surprise! I admit I was really surprised when they told me. I never feel like I do all that much, I just do what needs to be done, but it is nice to be acknowledged and it really is pretty special. I even get a bonus...exrtra moolah is always good!
