X

We watched 3 films this weekend: Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia and Solaris.
I like all three, as they were each weird in their own special way and at least they made me think.
Magnolia was probably the hardest one for me to get into really, I just had a hard time sympathizing or caring about the characters very much. THe fact that their all tied together (however loosely) was interesting, but in the end I think all of these people were a little over the top.
Punch Drunk Love was probably the oddest film I've seen in a while, I can only presume that it's one of those films where you get out of it whatever you want to get out of it. It did ratchet Adam Sandler up a notch in my book.
Solaris, while I enjoyed it, was probably my least favorite of this batch. I like the story and the philisophical ideas it brings up, but kind of like the Matrix, I found myself that the science-fiction involved was a too flimsy. Too many things happened in the movie where I wanted to ask, "but didn't this happen just a few scenes ago that doesn't mesh withw what you just said?" In then end I guess it just tried to be a second-chance love story and a sci-fi story at the same time, and while it pulls it off pretty well it left something to be desiered

Yay Weekend

Got sick Thursday afternoon and went home early. I'm not sure what was wrong with me, but if I had to guess it was either some sort of allergy or a head cold. I staid home Friday mostly because I still felt bad, I was caught up on my work and didn't want to sit at my desk all day feeling slightly marginal.
It was nice to spend the day at home Friday with the wife, she worked on school stuff and I rested and played Fallout 2.
Played games on Saturday with the regular group, we had a big group this time, topping off at 10. I got to play AGoT again, and again I didn't win or come close to it, in fact I was very nearly eliminated from the game..only Aldie's agreement not to crush me and then my backstabbing him saved me. We played a game called King Me, which was light and fluffy, but I thought it was plenty of fun. We then played Smarty Party and eventhough it's just a party game it's still a lot of fun, I didn't win, but I didn't finish last either :-)
After games we went to a Stanley Cup appearance in Plano with friends from the gaming group. They're part of a retired Greyhound adoption group and this was a fund raiser for them. We paid too much for tickets, it was for charity, and got our picture taken with the cup. Craig Ludwig was there. It was a nice evening spent with friends...all-in-all it was enjoyable.
Sunday we skipped Church, wife didn't want to go and I didn't feel very good again...and I had a cough. So we staid in and hung out. We went to the Dallas Fetish ball that night with friends and it wasn't quite the groovy experience it had been last year. Maybe the 'shock' and newness of the event wore off since we had expectations this time, but I don't think I was the only one disappointed. I heard muttered comments from other event goers and personally I think that either the Ball has outgrown the Lizard Lounge or that someone dropped the ball on organization. Either way, it was still mildy entertaining, though way too much money was spent that I'd rather have kept. Oh well.

Do Waka Do Waka Do

It is Friday evening, thrity minutes and counting till I get to go home...that's good. I'm much less irritable and bad moodish than I was this morning. It's been a pretty quiet, stress free day and I've gotten caught up on my work which is alway a good feeling.

Crux

I'm in an irritable, bitchy mood this morning. I'm don't think there is any particular reason, but just a lot of little ones. I haven't gone to sleep before midnight all week which has resulted in me being groggy and sleepy. The weather is rainy and cold today, so I'm sure that isn't helping much. Some person decided to stop in the middle of the road for no apparent reason this morning and things got rather tense as I hit my brakes and prayed that I didn't skid on the wet pavement. I scored 118 on an Internet IQ test (I know, I know), and while it shouldn't bother me...well it has...especially since everyone I know who has taken it got a higher score...sure I didn't try especially hard...but still.
I need to get a second job so the wife and I can be more financially sound...she's getting a job on top of all her school work and I feel guilty about that...but she seems bound and determined to go through with it.

I don't want to get a second job...I don't like working one job all that much...with two, I get even less time to do stuff I want...but I guess that's the way it goes. Make money, get crap, get old, break crap, buy more crap...die.

And to cap it all off, my computer at home is randomly rebooting itself. I'm a PC tech and I can't even fix my own computer....*sigh*

I'm going to go get coffee and play Age of Mythology on Easy so I can kill things mercilessly >:)

Oh, if anyone has ideas for post apocolyptic Wyoming.

Citizen Kane

I had trouble staying awake during the first part of this movie and, as I would find out later, I missed out on some important parts of the movie. It isn't that I found the first part boring, I was just tired and needed a bit of a nap. Eventually I woke myself up and started watching and geninuenly got interested in the film. As the final credits rolled I wasn't really sure how I felt, especially when the major plot device "rosebud" ended up not being the great revelation that I thought it would be. Still, I watched the commentary and that helped by pointing out a lot of things like camera work, etc that I would never have seen on my own...in addition I got to see the parts I missed.

I really enjoyed the movie, and would like to watch it again sometime...but I really wonder if I hadn't known that this movie was supposed to be a great classic would I have felt diffrently. Hard to tell since I can't find out. Easy to see why this one is consitantly number 1 in most lists.

Empire of Dirt!

This very Hawloween night I had a very long, drunken and insightful conversation with a random stranger whose name I believe to be Jason Johnson. We disucsed many subjects from modern circumstance to speculative historical presidence. I liked it...it was good. It was good stuff, but like everything, it came to an end.
