We watched Metropolis (1927) and Best in Show last night.
Metropolis was pure film geek watching pleasure. I was surprised at how long it was at 127 mins. and that with a lot of original footage missing. It was a little hard to follow sometimes, but I think that's because our mindset has changed in 75 years. Things that had signifigance then, don't as much now and someone who was used to silent films might have gotten more out of it than I probably did. The special effects were impressive, the story seemed a little hoaky, but it was impressive none-the-less. The DVD has some commentaries on it, so I'm thinking about looking into that, it may prove insightful.
Best in Show was another mockumentry by Christopher Guest. I got it because we had seen Waiting for Guffman and heard that Best in Show was even funnier. Guffman hadn't blown me away, I admit I was a little let down when it turned out not to be as funny as I had anticipated. But I felt that it was a good film with a lot going for it, and thought I'd give the genre another try. Best in Show seemed to be a level above, though it was pretty much the same formula, with a lot of the same cast. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it had me rolling on several occasions. Fred Willard in particular, as the annoying announcer at the dog show, had some really great lines.
I think the best thing about Best in Show is that I wouldn't be surprised to find that the reality far outways the mock documentary.
