I don't listen or like Britney Spears' music and I don't particularly care for the pop culture she is a part of. The one thing that I have admired about her though, is her claim to be a virgin. The recent confession that she has had sex with only one person after a prolonged relationship brought the subject back to mind.
While I take all this with some skepticism I'm often surprised at how people if you'll forgive my lack of vocabulary seem to see it as "oh, who is she trying to fool?", as if she thinks we're all stupid and is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. When I first heard about this I took a different point of view, especially as a person who believes that sex should wait for marriage or at least a healthy relationship. I admired her courage for claiming to want to "wait for her wedding day" and taking on the tag of virgin in a societal climate where these are not popular things. A world where if you're over 20 and a virgin you get sniggered at and people ask "why couldn't they get any?"
I see Ms. Spears as a role model for a lot of young pre-teen and teenage girls, and whether her claims to chastity are truthful or not I think the intentions are admirable. Just maybe, those young girls who idolize her will understand that they don't have to engage sexually in order to be cool or sexy. That waiting to be married or waiting at all is something that is acceptable and even preferable; that having a healthy relationship with the other person is far more important than sexual intercourse.
I may be putting more into this than there really is, but I think there is some good here. It's an idea that needs to be put forward more.
