What was I thinking...

I've said it before, I'll say it again...drinking and blawging doesn't mix. The following was in response to a comment made on a friend of mine's blog.

You'll have to click on the link below. I sometimes think it's sad that I have get shloshed on wine to speak what's really in my heart and mind. For better or worse what I said is really what I think and feel. Maybe it's more of what I think and feel than anything substantial, but what can you do.

Oh let's not slip into "oh, it's Georgia" Southern bashing. Racial prejudice was well and alive in the North before the Civil War and it migrated south at the end of the war. Thanks to "Far from Heaven" for pointing out that racial prejudice existed north of the Mason-Dixon Line well into the 20th Century. At least Georgia and the rest of the South have an excuse for its prejudice. Had you been occupied by Federal troops and seen your ruling class transplanted with the lower class and former slaves (who, lets face it, couldn't read or write for the vast majority) you'd probably be a little bit bitter as well.

The Northern portion of the United States sold its slave population south as the transition between industry and agriculture began. The industrial prosperity of the North was based on the money brought in part by the money made from selling slaves to the agrarian south.

I make NO apologies for slavery, it was what it was. If you happen to be black, well I can only give you alternate history. You'd be better off had the South won its struggle for freedom or had the Federal gov't left well enough alone. Black slaves would have been integrated into a society that was familiar with them and their culture. They would also have been educated in reading and writing so that they could be useful and productive members of society. One does not take ignorant, unknowing people and give them the right to decide policyÂ…unless you're the United States Government.
