Go for it...

Heh, I downloaded De Colores in mp3 format. It's not quite what I remember from Spanish Class, but the concept brings back some great memories from High School. Daryl Hardy singing this in horrible Spanish as he swayed back and forth to bad rhythm. I played basketball…well I was on the basketball team, Daryl actually played in games…I'm not sure we were ever friends, but I always thought he was a pretty cool dude. I found out after I graduated that he was Mormon, weird how you can go to school with some one for six or seven years and not know that.

Daryl and Brian Wells I always considered them the "Jordan vs. Bird" of our JV basketball squad. Both skinny white guys that could play well for a Central Texas white bread 3A school. I remember Brian challenging me to a 1 on 1 game after I had mouthed off something to him…we played after school and not wanting to really do it I let him win…really, I let him win. But one of my triumphant moments as a teen came when I kicked his ass 5-1 when we did a 1-1 tournament during a practice…I'm not sure if he let me win or not…but I had been practicing my hook shoot and I took him to town with it. Being a slow dumpy white kid who couldn't shoot, the hook was my only prayer…sadly I got schooled by another kid who I should have been able to beat. Maybe the thrill of victory over Brian was too much…after that there was nothing left to really go for.

Ah well, good memories

What was I thinking...

I've said it before, I'll say it again...drinking and blawging doesn't mix. The following was in response to a comment made on a friend of mine's blog.

You'll have to click on the link below. I sometimes think it's sad that I have get shloshed on wine to speak what's really in my heart and mind. For better or worse what I said is really what I think and feel. Maybe it's more of what I think and feel than anything substantial, but what can you do.

Oh let's not slip into "oh, it's Georgia" Southern bashing. Racial prejudice was well and alive in the North before the Civil War and it migrated south at the end of the war. Thanks to "Far from Heaven" for pointing out that racial prejudice existed north of the Mason-Dixon Line well into the 20th Century. At least Georgia and the rest of the South have an excuse for its prejudice. Had you been occupied by Federal troops and seen your ruling class transplanted with the lower class and former slaves (who, lets face it, couldn't read or write for the vast majority) you'd probably be a little bit bitter as well.

The Northern portion of the United States sold its slave population south as the transition between industry and agriculture began. The industrial prosperity of the North was based on the money brought in part by the money made from selling slaves to the agrarian south.

I make NO apologies for slavery, it was what it was. If you happen to be black, well I can only give you alternate history. You'd be better off had the South won its struggle for freedom or had the Federal gov't left well enough alone. Black slaves would have been integrated into a society that was familiar with them and their culture. They would also have been educated in reading and writing so that they could be useful and productive members of society. One does not take ignorant, unknowing people and give them the right to decide policy…unless you're the United States Government.

Justice

"...we hold to the belief that the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. If you would take a man's life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die."

A Game of Thrones - GRR Martin pg. 16 (paperback)

The Song of Ice and Fire is an amazing book. GRR Martin writes with such vivid detail and soul that you can feel everything that transpires on the page. If you have not read them I can not recommend them enough.

Book 1: Game of Thrones
Book 2: A Clash of Kings
Book 3: Storm of Swords
Book 4: "coming soon"

Fuck Monotheism

"I believe that there are hockey gods and I believe that they reward the team 99 percent of the time that works the hardest." -Mike Babcock Head Coach of the Ducks from some nhl.com article

I like it! :clap

HOCKEY

You know I'm sick of all the sports people complaining about how the NHL playoffs have somehow been disappointing for the only fucking reason that the gawddamned Red Wings and Avs aren't in the semi-finals…never mind the Stars you fucking bigoted assholes.

What the hell is up with that!?!? The Minn. Wild came back from a 3-1 deficit not once, but TWICE! The Ducks SWEPT the Wings and managed to get by the Stars 4-2, then swept the Wild. Giguere allowed ONE goal in the series against the Wild, the man has played his fucking balls off in every series he's been in. He stymied the Stars and I know that Stars are a good gawddamned team…the best Mr. Hicks could afford to buy. Giguere has stood on his head and been a thief, contortionist and brick wall all in one. It's simply fucking amazing.

I just can't understand, if you love hockey, this has to be the most amazing playoff season ever. Maybe we'll get lucky and Ottawa will put the Devils away and give us a good series against the Ducks.

Forgive me a moment

I wish things were simple again like they were in the good ol' days, days gone by. We fight against the bad guys, we kill them but it is justified because they're bad. Our guys, even ourselves die and we die the glorious and honorable death, the hurt is bad, but it was a good hurt. America was great; red, white and blue flowed in powerful torrents through our veins. We were Americans with God on our side and righteous might in our fists.

We had heroes brave and bold. Honest Abe fighting for the oppressed slaves, Master Roberts fighting against the oppressive federal government. Good solid men who mustered up to the line and kicked in as was their duty, they didn't shy away but stood solid. Some gave, some died, some stay forever.

Ah that's when it was good, solid and steady. You knew who you were, you knew who you'd die for and you knew what it was all about.

More chicken sacrafices?

I am a monotheistic Christian, except when it comes to hockey. The hockey gods are a sniveling, cruel, vengeful, and diabolical lot. They must delight in the suffering of fans, that's the only explanation for what happened last night. The Stars lose to the Mighty Ducks 4-3 and lose the series 4-2. They lost to the Mighty Ducks. Only a cold intelligence with the cruelest intentions could let such a thing occur, but so it is and we just have to learn to move along.

In the spirit of sportsmanship and gentlemanly behavior, congratulations to the Ducks as they played an outstanding series and were definitely the better team.

These are more for my own memory than the enjoyment of others, but if you like them then bully for you. These are all from our gaming session on Saturday.

"Does anyone here have wood?" -my wife...trying to trade resources in a game with 3 guys.

Face it bub

Having gone back and reread some of my recent blogs I now realize that using a word processor and spell checker are a good thing. As much as I want to shot from the hip with my thoughts, I come out looking a lot less ignorant if the machine helps me. Proof reading is probably good too.
